Totem

Cyanotype on white marble

2016

Using a contact print, Mary Gold exposed plants to South Tyrolean marble coated with a light-sensitive solution. Her thus created stones are reminiscent of the encyclopaedic collection of plants as well as botanical drawings, nature prints and early photograms of the 19th century.

This listing approach presents the artist with an access that is emotionally interwoven with the person depicted and with its bearer: she calls the created work Totem. Organic nature combines with the inorganic. In this symbiosis she achieves a resurrection, which creates a connection between the physical natural phenomenon of a single plant and the underlying idea of its flora.
